If you have dealt with hair loss or hair thinning due to lupus, you aren’t alone. Lupus and hair loss due to skin involvement, disease activity, or as a side effect of medication can occur. In the past 17 years since my lupus diagnosis, I have had several periods that my hair loss was severe due to both disease activity and also as a side effect of chemo (in one specific instance).
Because of this symptom, my mom – who was a hair stylist for 45 years – showed me how to use extensions and wigs. At first, I was really hesitant because I was very self-conscious and didn’t know if anyone would be able to notice. But as I learned how to use them properly and pick out pieces that worked for me, I became much more comfortable.
