Splendid Spoon Review: Clean, Vegan Eating for LupusChicks

December 23, 2020

Marisa Zeppieri

Plant-based, Nutrient-dense healthy meals…delivered to your door!

What happens when we are going into a flare, already in a flare, or just completely exhausted because well, lupus and chronic illness. Well, we tend to make really quick, poor food choices. Or we don’t eat (no, Bueno). Or, we grab something easy and fast, usually in a box and highly processed with a ton of sugar. What’s the issue here? Well, this pattern usually sets us up on a vicious cycle – we already feel bad, we eat nutrient-empty food, experience a sugar spike, and feel worse after it drops.

But let’s be honest…since this is an “honest review” post – cooking, grocery shopping, and creating meals is really freaking hard when you are chronically ill and/or in a flare.

A Personal Brief of Food & Symptom Severity

So what can we do? Well here is one option I am excited to share with you! If you have followed LupusChick over the past 12 years, you know that food, diet and supplementation have been major players in me decreasing the severity and how often I get certain symptoms (not all but some that were very bothersome), and after working with allergists, nutritionists, and function med doctors, I was able to go from 12 to 4 medications through diet and supplementation.

So, here is the deal. I LOVE to eat clean. But the fact of the matter is, lupus is still highly active in my body and I have never been in a true remission. Many days out of the week, I still struggle – and I am someone who absolutely loves to be in the kitchen (to prove it, check this out!!).

But there are days I can absolutely not go grocery shopping and/or cook. And with COVID, being here in NY, going to the grocery store was just not happening.

Enter Splendid Spoon!

The Splendid Spoon Low Down

Some points that really stood out to me:

  • The ingredient list! Wow – packed with pure, whole foods, nutrient-dense choices and ingredients I would personally buy in the grocer like beans, kale, cinnamon, almond butter, nutmeg, plantains, chickpeas, etc. You will recognize and be able to pronounce everything you are actually eating – no fake stuff or chemicals here.
  • Every dish I heated up made my house smell like heaven. They say you eat with your eyes first, but for me it is definitely my nose first.
  • There is a huge selection of smoothies, wellness shots, bowls, soups and more. See below for specifics.
  • It’s affordable, and with our LupusChick discount you can save $$!

Examples of Splendid Spoon items you can try/what I tried:

The Cuban Black Bean Bowl with Plantains and Scallions

Absolutely delicious, comforting, filling, and the ingredients were heaven:
Organic Brown Rice, Plantains, Organic Kale, Organic Tomatoes(Tomatoes, Tomato Juice, Sea Salt, Citric Acid, Calcium Chloride), Black Beans, Scallions, Lime Juice, Red Onion, Garlic, Salt, Cilantro, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Jalapeno Pepper, Cumin, Dried Shiitake Mushroom, Paprika, Chipotle Powder, Oregano, Bay Leaf

The Dragon Fruit Berry Smoothie with Pineapple Juice

There are SO many smoothies to choose from on Splendid Spoon. This is the Dragon Fruit Berry, but I also enjoyed the Mango Guava Smoothie and the Pumpkin Spice Smoothie. Very filling, amazing ingredients, and perfect for when you know you need to get something nutritious and delicious in your body but maybe can’t quite deal with a full meal.

Butternut Turmeric Soup

Another amazing meal that both me and my mother enjoyed was the Butternut Turmeric Soup. Check out this incredible ingredient list:
Water, Butternut Squash, Onions, Sweet Potatoes, Coconut Milk (Coconut, Water), Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Organic Celery, Sea Salt, Turmeric, Black Pepper, Rosemary, Cinnamon, Nutmeg

And What About A Boost of Wellness?

Enter in Splendid Spoon‘s wellness shots, digestion and detox shots. Personally, I am obsessed with ginger, so my favorite was the wellness shot with ginger, orange juice, lemon and oregano extract – loaded with anti-inflammatory power and antioxidants. And wow, was it zingy and tasty – just the way I want anything with ginger to be! I could literally drink one of these every single day.

The truth is, everything I had from Splendid Spoon tasted amazing and was fulling. The ingredients couldn’t be any better and meal prep was a snap. Reheating soups and bowl on the stovetop literally only took a few minutes after putting the food into a sauce pan. It doesn’t get much easier than that!

Through LupusChick, you can get a discount right now to try it all yourself. Or you can email me at Marisa@lupuschick.com if you have any specific questions about the food I ate, etc.

Honestly, if you are going to try a delivery meal service, you cannot go wrong with Splendid Spoon. I am thrilled this was my first food delivery experience ever and the entire process was seamless, easy, and absolutely delicious. So don’t wait until you fall into a flare and then are worried about how you will prepare food or eat something healthy. Stock up now and have Splendid Spoon on hand to take great care of your nutritional needs when you don’t have the energy to deal with it!
